Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781, when 44 settlers established a farming community on the banks of a river they named El Rio de Porciuncula, calling it El Pueblo de la Reina de los Angeles. The city was incorporated on April 4, 1850, shortly after California became a state, and became the seat of Los Angeles County.
Oil discoveries in the late 1800s and early 1900s, followed by the rise of the film industry in Hollywood starting in the 1910s, drove decades of rapid growth. The city hosted the Summer Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1984, and is scheduled to host them again in 2028.
