Local History & Heritage

From Willmore City to a Global Port

Long Beach's history as a port and industrial city still shapes the neighborhoods renters move into today.

Long Beach was founded in 1882 as Willmore City on the shore of San Pedro Bay and incorporated under its current name shortly after. The discovery of oil at nearby Signal Hill in the 1920s brought rapid growth, and the city's deepwater harbor developed into the Port of Long Beach, now the second busiest container port in the United States, moving a record 9.6 million shipping containers in 2024 and supporting roughly 1 in 5 jobs citywide.

The historic RMS Queen Mary ocean liner has been docked permanently at the Long Beach waterfront since 1967, having sailed around Cape Horn because she was too large for the Panama Canal. The ship earned the nickname the Grey Ghost for her wartime paint scheme and now operates as a hotel and event venue.

Long Beach is also a college town, home to California State University, Long Beach, with its landmark Walter Pyramid arena, and Long Beach City College, which offers two years of free tuition to graduates of the Long Beach Unified School District. Aerospace, shipping, and marine research remain central to the local economy.

Today the city is made up of more than 50 distinct neighborhoods, from the beachfront blocks of Belmont Shore to the canal lined islands of Naples and the tree lined streets of Bixby Knolls, giving renters a wide range of settings within a single city.
